I enjoyed The Lost Art of Self. There are numerous lines and sections that make you stop and reflect. I think the author is good, and has the potential to be great. I'm giving the book four stars because although I enjoyed the book, there were a number of poems in the latter half which weren't as strong or resonant as those which first drew me in. I do think the author has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps working at it.Product details

“The Lost Art of Self” takes you on Marc’s journey to discover himself and ponder the essence of life. Through a variety of poems, dark and light, emulating phases much like life itself, the book invites you to a world full of questions, some rumination, much reflection - letting us have a peek into his views of life, faith, friendship and relationships in general.
Reading this was like riding a roller coaster of feelings. Marc has a way of pulling in the readers into his mind with his words - from a simple thought most of us have about our daily life in “Some Days”, to words of wisdom reminding us to keep our heart and eyes open in “Live to Learn”, to wistful poem about someone he loves (or admires) in “A Star in the Shadow”. And then there was him waxing lyrical of love (“That Sweet Disease), a short piece that cuts deep like a knife (aptly titled “Cut”), a dark one that tells us of the rising anger (“Wrath”) and an even darker piece of thoughts dying (“Zombie”). I love the lighter pieces like the single-stanza poem “Ever the Optimist” to remind us there are still hope and dreams, and “Angel”, yet another short poem of one ’not of this world’. One of my favourites is “Walk Away”, a ten-line piece with simple words, telling us about the feeling left behind after what once was.
This book poetically paints a picture of the state of being lost, and describes the darkness that comes with the light a little more beautifully. A great book I’d read again and again.

This unusual work will especially appeal to those facing personal challenges of identity. I have reviewed it from my own point of view, purely as poetry. So, as always, do not let my star count override your judgement of content. More on the stars, counting, and my rating challenges later. Let’s look at the important stuff Brown’s work.
Brown is true to his title in these ninety-one poems. This is about an unpleasant insight most of us have had, and few of us talk about having become our jobs, others’ expectations, our appearance to outsiders. The lost art of self, indeed.
For a simple but deftly given experience, turn to Angel. Here Brown touches on an experience we all have had - seeing someone or something extraordinary. For a scarier insight, turn to Purposely Lost, where escape is its own confinement.
For an interesting contrast, read The Old Grey Man (about another) and Misery Box (about oneself.)
Here’s an example of Brown giving words to pessimistic feelings In Some Days, this “Adulthood is where dreams go to die /And reality kicks in.”
For a really scary experience, turn to One Day of Night “Walking your footsteps /I’m right behind you /As I reach to touch your hair. /Just a breeze on the back of your neck /It’s safer to rationalize than know the truth.”
If you’re scrolling for the tiny carps, give up. Maybe a typo. Some of the poems are complex, so be patient. Back to the good stuff.
An odd but engaging favourite here is Second Chances, which is told as a conversation plus inner thoughts; here’s a sample “I sit with a mouth full of lies and excuses /Like a loaded gun. /I picture the outcome /And it really could blow up in my face...”
A sad favourite here is the short poem A Dream for Sale. No spoiler quotes here; get this book and read to this point. For bitterness, turn to This Is All There Is.
In D.N.R. we have a first-person account of Do Not Resuscitate. Brown may make you uncomfortable in your own skin and prison in other pieces; here he shows someone unwilling to have their own skin become a prison.
Brown reinforces his theme in A Hard Truth, social commentary on free will.
For hard truths in relationships, turn to Mine Field and then to Zombie. Finally, for introspection into self-worth, turn to Tree of Thoughts. This is an interesting volume.
All that said, how do I come up with three stars? My personal guidelines, when doing an ‘official’ KBR review, are as follows five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I try hard to be consistent. From this curmudgeon, three stars is a strong recommendation. Maybe three point four nine nine stars. Your personal rating may well be higher. Enjoy.

In this book, Marc D Brown allows us to bear witness to his process of personal reflection. From beginning to end, these poems are honest, straightforward, and relatable to the human experience. His subjects and topics offer an in depth look at the mind of a poet as he's "working something out".
Early poems "Pre-Grief" and "Be the Fox" remind us of our personal responsibility to ourselves and the world around us. Brown writes darkness and depression very well, but won't hesitate to poke fun at himself a few lines or poems later. It helps us remember to laugh at ourselves.
Brown's love poems are beautiful. "So Careless" and "If" start us off sweetly and build us up to the more passionate pieces like "Now Until Forever" and "The Scarlet Heart".
Marc D Brown also reflects on crises of faith, crises of identity, and the handling of other uncontrollable life crises that come with the act of being alive. Hope, however, is threaded through this entire collection offering a positive outlook and inspiration through struggle.
"I deal with me in my own damned way
With no help and no interference"
This line from "The Crutch", and the title poem describes the tone of Brown's writing. He's unafraid to tell us like it is or admit to his own flaws within his writing, within himself, which serve as a mirror for our own faults and shortcomings.
Brown airs out his grievances just after the middle of the collection with poems like "A Dream for Sale" and "Flick the Switch" and the poem "The Snail" is the aftermath. Again, hope for a better world, a better self, and a better life is a common theme.
Marc D Brown is a poet I very much enjoyed reading and I will definitely read more of his work!
