'A lack of exercise could be killing twice as many people as obesity…’
Research from The University of Cambridge

Mounting evidence shows that regular exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and can help reduce the risk of developing a range of negative health issues.

Those who exercise are less likely to get ill and they will generally live longer.

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous and people, from young children and teenagers through to pregnant women and the elderly, can incorporate some form of exercise into their daily routine.

This book uncovers the physiological advantages of running and demonstrates how a feeling of well-being equips us to handle challenges in life.

Start Line goes beyond running and covers the broader topics of flexibility, strength training, high intensity training (HIT), swimming and cycling. There are expert-ratified chapters on pain management, running for women and access for the disabled as well as numerous valuable ‘Authors’ Tips’.

Martin Haigh and Geoff Cumber have been running for pleasure, health and in competition for many years and they bring vast experience to bear in this easy-to-navigate text.

Start Line is an inspiring read that shows how and why people can take up the sport of running and gain enormous benefits to their health and well-being.

Dr. Martin Haigh
– started running at the age of 20 after a footballing injury put him out of that sport.

Martin has been a member of Halifax Harriers for 42 years. He is their Vice President and former Chairman of their successful Race Committee. He has run 20 Marathons (four of them under three hours) and 10 consecutive Yorkshire Three Peaks Races (five of them under 330). Each Marathon has been completed to raise funds for charities, such as Whizz Kids, Outward Bound Trust, Cancer Research, St. John’s Ambulance, Calderdale Special Care Baby Unit, Bermerside Special School in Halifax and Children with Leukaemia.

Martin has also competed in many other races; on the fells, trail and on the track. Martin is a Triathlete and
has competed in many events including the London Triathlon and, in July 2014, completed the IRONMAN UK, raising funds for SCOPE in the process. Also in 2013 Martin cycled 950 miles, from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, to raise money for the apprentice charity Cycle for Work, (now Working Wonders). Martin is a British Cycling, Sky Ride Leader and a UK Athletics Leader in Running Fitness.

Geoff Cumber
– started running at the age of 38 and very quickly joined a running club. Since then he has trained in a
very focused way which has enabled him to run 37 Marathons with 18 of them under three hours and also has
a best 10k time of 38 minutes (at the age of 61).

Geoff has competed on a global stage and has won many prizes in the over 55, over 60 and over 65 category. He won his age group, at the London Marathon in 2007, with a time of 2 hours 53 minutes (which was a course record for seven years) followed, in 2008, by winning his age group in the Boston (USA) Marathon, the world’s oldest event at this distance.

Geoff has been the 6th fastest Marathon runner, for his age, in the world. He is the third fastest in Europe and quickest in the UK. Geoff has also competed in 15 Triathlons and has picked up prizes in various categories. Geoff has been a member of Halifax Harriers since 1992 and puts a lot back into the sport. He is a founder member of the Harriers Race Committee and has been Race Director for a number of high-profile events.

Geoff is married to Sarah Cumber who is also a seriously fast runner and 17th Lady in the London Marathon in 2014.
