4.5 stars. Like Pizza and Beer is the second Dino Martini mystery and the sequel to Like Coffee and Doughnuts. And like the first book, this one is also a very fun and enjoyable m/m mystery romance.

I do recommend reading Like Coffee and Doughnuts first, even though this sequel is a stand-alone mystery. You'll get way more out of the character progression as well as see where Dino and Seth's relationship started if you read the first one.

In this one, Dino is still figuring out what it means to be dating one's best friend, as well as coming to grips with his bisexuality--he's enjoying all the perks, but still is unsure of how to represent himself and "coming out" to others. Seth is still as fiery and forthright as in the first book, and his and Dino's chemistry is very "spicy delicious." Their back-and-forth and banter is really fun to read, and their warm, sexy, comfortableness with each other is very palpable. It's also fun to watch Dino realize more and more how much he wants to be with Seth, even though this new relationship is so different from what he's used to.

Along with that, Dino is being pulled between two mysteries--one for his ex-girlfriend Gigi whose restaurant is being vandalized, and one for Seth, who is trying to expose his sister's boyfriend as the nogoodnik that he is. Dealing with both his past and current romances adds more tension to the mix than Dino is wanting, and he struggles to juggle his work/life balance, as well as assuaging the worries of the suddenly insecure Seth who is less keen on watching the returning easy familiarity between Dino and Gigi.

Fortunately, most of the conflict isn't about whether to return to once was, but figuring out what's going on right now, and along the way, Dino faces culinary loan sharks, saboteurs, possessive strippers, and his nosy (yet hilarious) Golden Girl neighbors.

My only niggle is that I do sometimes feel like Dino still over-narrates and tells (rather than shows) in his first person POV, but even with that, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend both it and the previous volume.

All and all, a very fun read, loved the continuing romance between Dino and Seth, and I would definitely get in line to buy #3 in the series if it comes out.

Like Pizza and Beer Dino Martini Mysteries Book 2 edition by Elle Parker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I read the first book (Like Cough and Doughnuts) and I really liked it. As soon as I finished I looked to see if there was another book around the same characters and to my luck there was. The character development was not need because it was the same gang we fell in love with in the first book. Not having to take time to develop the characters allowed for us to start with the action. I learned so much about these characterrs during the process.

Dino and Seth are still a couple and the book picks up 1 month after the first one so we really did not miss a lot. Seth is still teaching Dino about love but finds out that he has a couple of more things to learn as well. All in the mist of two huge cases that takes a lot of Dino's time. Oh yeah and we are introduced to Seth's sister and Dino's ex-girlfriend. We also learn about the ladies that leave in the building with Dino.

All I can say is I love these books and how this author knows how it feels to be gay and fall in love with a man for the first time I do not have a clude but job well done. I am ready for #3 whenever Ella Parker is ready to write it.
I LOVED Like Coffee and Doughnuts, so I've been looking forward to the follow up for a while now. Although this is shorter than the first book it's still pretty action packed and you also get to see the relationship between Dino and Seth grow. I really like Dino and can relate more to him, but my favorite character is Seth and I really felt for him when Dino tries to hide their relationship around their friends.

Like Pizza and Beer also introduces new characters like Dino's ex-girlfriend, Seth's sister, and an oddball loan shark that likes to cook gourmet dinners. I have a feeling we'll be hearing more from the loan shark in future books.

This series is kind of wacky, a bubble off of reality if you will. Movies like How to Steal a Million and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang come to mind. There is almost a buddy cop action/comedy feeling (but, you know, with m/m), but although everyone is larger than life, they're not caricatures either - it's comedic without being silly. Personally, I love stuff like this and can't wait for another follow up. )
Elle Parker has a good voice. She's not quite the master of sitcom-funny writing that Janet Evanovich is, but then again, she focuses on two bisexual men who, as luck and fate would have it, have found each other. That earns her a lot of brownie points in my book.

I think Dino Martini and Seth Donnelly are two of my favorite characters in the world of gay romance detectives. It's interesting how popular - and how effective - the idea of a bi cop/detective can be, but Dino, for all his old-fashioned hangups, seems to roll with the punches, to a point. He's always known he was bi; but it took his omnisexual best friend to understand just what that could mean. I love their dynamic.

Being attached to Seth Donnelly is easy from a friendship perspective, but a little trickier when it comes to crossing the line into romance. Having a lover who loves a good fistfight is one thing; when he wants to kiss you in public, that's a whole other kettle of fish. And Dino has to learn how to deal with that kettle.

The small-scale mysteries that Dino and Seth work out together feel right for the location - Gulf Coast Florida through the eyes of permanent residents. Like Carl Hiaasen with his south Florida locus, and the aforementioned Evanovich with her quirky Trenton locale, Dino's world is defined by his life.

The only thing that makes me smile is that Dino Martini is such an old-fashioned Italian guy from New York--he's only forty-one, which to me seems like a baby. But hey, I like that Dino's family influenced him so much.

Anyway, Parker HAS to get the third book in this series out, because she has fans awaiting...
